While there are many important rules to follow when decorating a space, the most overrated is symmetry. There are many forms of symmetry and that does not always have to mean ‘equal’. People often confuse balance for symmetry – a space can be balanced without being completely symmetrical. Try using an odd number of pieces with height variations. They key is to not go overboard – if you’re worried you have, stand back and look at what you’ve put out. If you think there is too much visual weight on one end versus the other, change it! Trust your eye and pull something from one side of the space to the other and it’ll probably have more balance.
